Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term’s start, I remained in my room the whole day, too fearful to step out and introduce myself. However, today I can proudly state that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always rewarding. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breaking and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also found that being authentic is essential. With such a wide array of people in the program and at the university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded individuals.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was definitely a significant upgrade from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few elements helped me navigate through this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are in the same situation. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp during your first year. Seek support from your classmates and the staff!

This brings me to my next point. The staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and comprehend the difficulties that students encounter. They show empathy toward students and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I referred to taking leaps earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to build relationships with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main lesson from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the support provided. You can never have an excess of assistance!

On the whole, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be reduced with the various support options accessible from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated and how to find joy despite pressures such as examinations and deadlines.
