Around ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This can be one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and for prospective students, it may pose a significant worry. On the inaugural day of moving into my accommodation, just days before classes kicked off, I spent the whole day in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet anyone. Now, I can proudly assert that I’ve made some of the finest friends here at university and within my course. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? It’s beneficial to take a leap at the year’s start. If you’re not quite ready or comfortable, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaker events designed to help you engage with others. Additionally, if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With such a variety of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find people just like you.
Another obstacle I faced was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being in this environment can impact your self-esteem; you might witness others studying and feel insufficient. What assisted me was reminding myself that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something difficult to grasp, chances are others do too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out to peers and staff!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely desire your success and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They are empathetic and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the academic year. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had accessed it earlier. I referenced taking leaps previously – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to bond with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson is to take full advantage of the assistance available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never isolated and has equipped me to find enjoyment even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
