In October 2022, ten months ago, I was overcome with apprehension, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it might be among your foremost concerns. On my moving-in day, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet new people. Now, I can proudly say I have developed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I found that it’s best to take bold steps at the year’s onset. If you’re not prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events designed to help you connect with fellow students. I also realized that if you can embody one principle, it should be to be yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to connect with others who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the volume of work and complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the next. Being immersed in such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. Several things assisted me in navigating that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar challenges. If something is unclear, I can nearly assure you there are others who also find it perplexing. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Look for guidance from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is fantastic. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I referenced taking bold steps at the beginning; I did undertake one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to connect with faculty, and it is undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your personal growth! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the support available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.
