By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I currently stand?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles I faced was forming friendships. This certainly ranks as one of the more daunting facets of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might be among your primary apprehensions. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day retreating to my room, too intimidated by the thought of venturing out and meeting others. However, as I sit here today, I can confidently assert that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel quite prepared or at ease, don’t worry! There will be ample ice-breaker opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, be true to yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you are certain to find others like you.

Another challenge I encountered was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always conducive to confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same situation. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can nearly guarantee that others are too. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to thrive and acknowledge that students face challenges. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned before about taking risks – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is tremendously valuable. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s certainly one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My main lesson from this aspect of university is to make the most of the support you’re offered. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated by the various support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to find joy alongside the pressures of exams and deadlines.
