Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about the future. I was on the verge of embarking on my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a first-year student. Diving into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey brimming with personal development, trials, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more challenging facets of commencing university, and if you’re a potential student reading this, it might be your primary worry. On my first day of moving into my housing, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day tucked away in my room due to feeling too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, sitting here now, I can assuredly declare that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was striking up casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling slightly unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to help you connect with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, be authentic. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you’re certain to find others who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel as though you fall short. A few insights assisted me through those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same circumstances as you. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can almost guarantee that there are at least a few others who also feel puzzled. Therefore, ask for assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and recognize that students face challenges. They show understanding toward students and maintain open communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking chances – I took one at the onset of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My principal takeaway from this segment of university life is to seize the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!

In a broader sense, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both in the lead-up to and during university, are mostly unfounded and can be eased by the numerous support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it’s taught me how to find joy even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
