Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I commenced my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing uncertainty was not something my previously reserved self was familiar with. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, challenges, and enjoyment. What insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the foremost and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently a significant worry for new university students. On my first day of moving into my residence, I remained in my room the whole day, too daunted to step out and meet new people. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships here at university and in my program. I discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. The takeaway? Take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared, don’t fret—there are numerous ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with others. Be yourself, and you’ll encounter those who share your interests.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the challenge of the content. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. It’s easy to feel inadequate when surrounded by peers who are working diligently. Keep in mind, everyone is experiencing the same situation. If you’re struggling with something, chances are others are too. Don’t hesitate to seek help—it’s vital during your first year. Reach out for support from fellow students and faculty!

The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to triumph and comprehend the challenges students face. They consistently communicate regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. I took the initiative by becoming a wellness representative for the year, which allowed me to connect with faculty—a valuable experience. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself. Make the most of the support available; you can never have too much!

This year has demonstrated to me that anxious feelings about university are often misplaced and can be eased with the support provided by faculty and fellow students. I have learned that I am never isolated and how to find enjoyment despite challenges such as exams and deadlines.
