Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I experienced a whirlwind of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unfamiliar wasn’t exactly what my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyable moments! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This can definitely be one of the more frightening elements of embarking on university life, and if you’re someone considering this opportunity, it may be one of your primary worries. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the full day confined to my room, far too daunted to venture out and meet others. Reflecting on this now, I can assertively say that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships here at this university and within this program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I gleaned? I discovered that it’s always beneficial to take a plunge at the beginning of the year. If you feel slightly unprepared or uncomfortable, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking occasions and events await to assist you in connecting with fellow students. Additionally, I learned that if you can embody one trait, be genuine. With such a wide array of individuals across the program and the university, you are certain to find like-minded peers.
An additional challenge was the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was indeed a notable increase in intensity from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a competitive setting isn’t always a boost for your confidence; you may witness peers studying and feel a sense of inadequacy. A few strategies helped me navigate this feeling, one of which was the reminder that everyone faces similar struggles. If something confounds you, I can almost assure you that others share the same predicament. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty for help!
This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t really make the most of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I referenced taking leaps earlier – I took one at the commencement of the year by becoming a well-being representative. This role provided me an opportunity to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and this is undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to leverage the assistance being offered. You can never have too much support!
In conclusion, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often misplaced and can be alleviated through the array of support systems available from both staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I’m never alone and how to find joy amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
