By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was embarking on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Reflecting on the academic year, it was a time rich in personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This often ranks among the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a significant worry. On my first day moving into my residence, just prior to the start of classes, I remained in my room throughout the day, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best connections at this university and within my program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversation with individuals in the same boat. So, what have I learned? I learned that taking a chance at the start of the year is always beneficial. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t stress! Numerous ice-breaking activities will assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, I discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse range of individuals in the program and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded peers.
Another hurdle was the difficulty of the workload and content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can test your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few strategies helped me navigate this, one being the acknowledgement that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp something, chances are others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Seek guidance from your classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize the challenges students encounter. They are understanding and keep open lines of communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. I mentioned taking chances – I did take one by becoming a wellbeing representative for the year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is tremendously advantageous. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
Ultimately, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
