Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was preparing to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and quiet self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of starting university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my dorm, just days before the term began, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, far too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, today I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it all originated from casual conversations with those in comparable situations. So, what did I grasp? I learned that taking the plunge at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not completely ready or at ease, no need to fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that staying true to yourself is essential. With such a wide array of diverse individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies helped me navigate this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you others don’t either. So, reach out for assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to embrace in the first year. Seek support from your classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really take full advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had engaged earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make use of the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that the anxious feelings leading up to and during university are often unwarranted and can be eased by the numerous support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I’m never alone and taught me how to enjoy myself despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
