Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, apprehensive, and unsure about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my academic journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize an academic year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more nerve-wracking parts of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my inaugural day relocating to my accommodations, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. Yet, sitting here at present, I can assert with confidence that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar predicaments. So, what has been my takeaway? I’ve learned that it’s always advantageous to take that initial leap at the start of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless opportunities for ice-breaking and events to facilitate connections with others. I’ve also recognized that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With so many diverse individuals across the course and the university, you’re certain to find like-minded people.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable escalation from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a setting can be taxing on your self-esteem; seeing peers study may lead you to feel inferior. A few strategies helped me overcome that sentiment, one being the realization that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re puzzled by a topic, I can almost guarantee there are others who share that confusion. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might very well be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Request guidance from both your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to students and keep an ongoing dialogue about our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. As I mentioned about taking leaps, I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. Holding this position enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is exceedingly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous things you can do for your own benefit! My key takeaway from this facet of university life is to fully utilize the assistance that is available. There’s no such thing as too much help!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the array of support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I am never isolated, and it has illustrated how to find joy amid pressures like exams and deadlines.
