By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Back in October 2022, ten months ago, I was overwhelmed by anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was familiar with. Looking back now, I can see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the semester, I spent the entire day in my room, too intimidated to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar positions. So, what did I discover? I discovered that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is essential. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There are numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events aimed at helping you connect with others. I also realized that authenticity is vital. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and university, you’re bound to encounter like-minded people.

Another challenge was the intensity and complexity of the coursework. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can impact your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few factors aided me in navigating this, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can nearly guarantee others do too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They truly want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with students and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral resources until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I took one by becoming a wellbeing representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the support available. You can never have too much!

All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated through the various support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never solitary and how to find enjoyment amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
