Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what have I gained from this year, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and for prospective students, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet others. However, today, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all initiated with light conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what lesson did I learn? It’s advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to aid you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse mix of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to find those who share your mindset.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was a substantial increase from A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being in this kind of environment can impact your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate this, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you struggle to comprehend something, I can nearly assure you that others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is arguably the most vital skill to acquire in the first year. Reach out for help from peers and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize the challenges that students encounter. They empathize and keep communication open regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the support services until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had earlier. I spoke of taking leaps previously – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to utilize the assistance provided. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the support available from faculty and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I am never alone and has taught me how to enjoy myself alongside pressures such as exams and deadlines.
