Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was prepared for. Reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights has this year imparted, and what is my current status?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting components of beginning university, and if you’re perusing this as a prospective student, it might be one of your major worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room as I felt too daunted to step outside and introduce myself to others. Yet, sitting here today, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it merely required engaging in casual conversation with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I discovered that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is advisable. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one trait, let it be authenticity. With the diverse array of individuals at the course and university, you are certain to encounter others like yourself.
Another obstacle I needed to navigate was the intensity of the workload and its complexity. There was certainly a significant escalation from A-levels, and in certain respects, a more substantial leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your self-esteem; you might witness others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors assisted me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reassurance that everybody is experiencing similar struggles. If you don’t comprehend something, I can almost promise there are at least a handful of others who also don’t grasp it. Thus, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to master in your first year. Do not hesitate to seek help from your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and are aware that students face challenges. They show understanding towards students and keep in regular contact with us throughout the year regarding our difficulties. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I indeed took one at the year’s outset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. Numerous opportunities exist to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s unequivocally one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this segment of university is to seize the support that is presented to you. There’s no such thing as too much!
In general terms, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both leading up to and throughout university, are nearly always baseless and can be mitigated by the wide array of supportive resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has enlightened me to the fact that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to relish life alongside sources of anxiety such as exams and deadlines.
