Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Reflecting now, I recognize a year abundant in personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what has this year revealed to me, and what is my current standing?

One of the foremost and most intimidating difficulties was forging friendships. This certainly ranks among the more fearsome elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it might be one of your largest worries. On my inaugural day settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term beginning, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I felt too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. As I sit here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve built a second family here at Imperial, and it only took initiating casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I discovered that it’s always advantageous to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to help you connect with fellow students. I also learned that if there’s one thing you should always be, it’s yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’ll surely find those who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the volume of work and complexity of the material. There was indeed a significant shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more substantial leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a setting doesn’t always boost your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in dealing with that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can almost assure you that there are others who are equally confused. Therefore, solicit assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to take in your first year. Seek help from your fellow students and the faculty!

This brings me to my next highlight. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I did so at the year’s onset by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are countless ways to become acquainted with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key insight from this aspect of university is to make the most of the support extended to you. It’s never too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated with the support available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressful elements such as exams and deadlines.
