Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my academic journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Exploring the unfamiliar was not a venture my previously introverted and reserved personality was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year of personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the primary and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and for prospective students, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into housing, a few days prior to classes commencing, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too daunted to venture out and interact with others. Today, I can proudly declare that I’ve forged some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what’s my takeaway? It’s beneficial to make that leap at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be a wealth of opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that being authentic is crucial. With such a vibrant mix of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.

Another challenge I encountered was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was definitely an increase in intensity compared to A-levels, and in certain ways, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being in such a competitive environment can shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. What aided me was the realization that everyone is navigating the same path. If you’re grappling with a concept, I can nearly assure you others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from both classmates and staff!

This segues into my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and keep in close contact with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. As I mentioned taking leaps – I took a significant step at the onset of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and enhancing that connection is one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My principal takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the available support. You can never have too much!

To sum up, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, whether before or throughout university, are oftentimes baseless and can be mitigated by the support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has illustrated that I’m never isolated and how to find joy despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
