Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Plunging into the unknown was hardly something my previously shy and reserved self was accustomed to. Reflecting on the past year, I see a school year filled with personal growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?

One of the primary and most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating aspects of embarking on university life, and if you’re a future student reading this, it may be one of your biggest concerns. On the first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term’s commencement, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, overwhelmed by the thought of venturing out to greet others. However, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever known, right here at this university and within this course. I have found a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with some casual conversation with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, there’s no need to fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities and events that will help you connect with others. I also learned that if you can embody any trait, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another obstacle I had to overcome was the intensity and complexity of the coursework. There was definitely a significant escalation from A-levels, and in some aspects an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. There were a few strategies that helped me combat that feeling, one of which was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who are also in the same predicament. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t be afraid to ask for support from your classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in the Materials department are truly exceptional. They genuinely want to see you succeed and are aware of the difficulties students face. They empathize with our situations and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned the importance of taking leaps – at the start of the year, I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with staff members, which is an incredibly beneficial opportunity. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s unquestionably one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the support that’s being provided to you. You can never have too much assistance!

In a broader sense, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are almost always irrational and can be alleviated by the variety of support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never truly alone, and it has taught me how to find joy even amidst sources of stress like exams and deadlines.
