Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plentiful enjoyment! So, what have I gleaned from this year, and where do I stand now?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting facets of commencing university, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it could be one of your greatest worries. On my first day moving into my residence, just days ahead of the semester beginning, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was initiating casual conversations with individuals in similar predicaments. What did I learn? I discovered that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. There is a vast array of diverse individuals across the program and the university; you are sure to encounter like-minded people.
Another challenge I had to surpass was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment doesn’t always bolster your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me during that time, one being the reminder that everyone shares your struggles. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that there are at least a handful of others who also find it perplexing. So, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to grasp during the first year. Seek help from your fellow students and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand the struggles students face. They express compassion and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support resources until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is an incredibly valuable endeavor. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best investments you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this particular element of university is to make the most of the support being provided. You can never have too much assistance!
Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are usually unfounded and can be mitigated through the numerous support resources available from faculty and peers. It has taught me that I am never isolated, and it has instructed me on how to find enjoyment alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
