Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t a familiar experience for my previously timid and reserved nature. Looking back, I perceive a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided me, and where do I find myself now?
One of the primary and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student perusing this, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my first day settling into my housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and interact with others. Today, I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this institution and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar predicaments. So, what insight did I gain? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, it should be your true self. With a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re likely to meet people akin to you.
Another challenge was the academic workload and difficulty of the content. There was indeed a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can test your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few factors assisted me during that period, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If there’s something you don’t grasp, I can almost assure you there are others who also don’t. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to internalize in the first year. Look for help from your classmates and instructors!
This leads me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They relate to the students and maintain open communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned previously about taking risks – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role permitted me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous methods to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the assistance provided to you. You can never have too much help!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the support options available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never solitary, and it has revealed how to have fun despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
