Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was apprehensive, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was accustomed to. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting facets of beginning university, and if you’re perusing this as a future student, it might be one of your primary worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room because I was too daunted to step out and introduce myself. Sitting here now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a risk at the start of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking activities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also found that if you can embody one trait, be authentic. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re certain to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the workload and the intricacy of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always conducive to your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few aspects aided me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are in the same predicament. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and understand that students encounter difficulties. They show compassion towards students and maintain constant dialogue with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so sooner. I referenced taking risks previously – I took one at the year’s outset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to become familiar with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the most advantageous steps you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are nearly always misplaced and can be mitigated with the numerous support resources accessible from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has illustrated how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
