Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles I faced was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most intimidating parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the term starting, I spent the whole day hiding in my room, daunted by the idea of stepping out and introducing myself to others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with simple conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what have I learned? I discovered it’s beneficial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to help you connect with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, be yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and the university, you’re bound to discover those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the difficulty of the material. There was a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in some instances, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can challenge your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same struggles. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you others don’t either. Therefore, seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for help from peers and faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend students’ challenges. They sympathize with students and uphold consistent communication throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I did take one at the year’s onset by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely valuable. There are various methods to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial things you can do for your personal growth! My primary takeaway is to seize the help provided. There’s no such thing as too much!

All in all, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated by the support options accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find joy even amidst the pressure of exams and deadlines.
