Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back over the past year, I recognize a journey rich with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what lessons has this year imparted to me, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This aspect is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be among your top worries. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room because I was too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known, right here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all originated from casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what insights did I gain? I realized that taking the initiative at the outset of the year is always a wise choice. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t worry! There will be abundant ice-breaker opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment isn’t always a boost for your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few strategies helped me navigate that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others are equally perplexed. Therefore, seek assistance. This may well be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They truly want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had accessed it sooner. I mentioned taking risks earlier – and I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to fully embrace the assistance you are provided. You can never have too much!

All in all, this year has taught me that feelings of apprehension, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated with the various support systems available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to enjoy myself amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
