Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something I, being previously shy and reserved, was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current state?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting facets of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it might be one of your primary concerns. On my first day of moving into my housing, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day secluded in my room because I was too apprehensive to step out and introduce myself to others. As I sit here today, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in small conversations with those in similar situations. So, what did I learn? I discovered that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always the best approach. If you don’t feel entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to facilitate your connections with others. I also learned that if you can embrace one thing, be yourself. There are an array of diverse individuals across the course and university; you’re certain to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the difficulty of the material. There was indeed a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always confidence-boosting; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few elements aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same situation as you. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who also find it perplexing. Hence, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Request help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and understand that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year about our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so sooner. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to become acquainted with the staff members, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to seize the assistance being offered. You can never have too much support!

In a broader sense, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated by the plethora of support options available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to have fun even amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
