Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about my future as I was set to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize it as a year rich with personal development, challenges, and enjoyable experiences! What insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently a major worry for first-time university students. On the initial day of moving into my accommodation, I spent the entirety of that day in my room, feeling daunted by the prospect of encountering new individuals. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, simply by engaging in light conversations with those in similar circumstances. The takeaway? Be bold at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker activities available to assist you in connecting with others. Be true to yourself, and you’ll discover like-minded individuals.

Another difficulty was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was a distinct leap from A-levels, and an even greater one between the first and second terms. This environment can test your self-esteem; you may feel insufficient when compared to peers. Keep in mind, everyone is experiencing the same thing. If you find something perplexing, others likely do too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is essential in your first year. Reach out to fellow students and faculty!

The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They keep us updated on our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which enabled me to connect with faculty, a priceless experience. There are numerous opportunities to get acquainted with faculty, and doing so is one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself. Make the most of the assistance available; you can never have too much!

This year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are typically unwarranted and can be eased with the support provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I am never alone and discovered how to relish my time, even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
