By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my typically reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This often ranks as one of the most frightening parts of entering university, and if you’re a future student, it might be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into accommodation, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet people. Now, I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some incredible friendships here at university and in my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. What is my takeaway? It’s wise to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events designed to help you connect with others. Additionally, be genuine. With such a diverse group of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.

An additional hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. I noticed a significant leap from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can impact your self-confidence; you might perceive yourself as falling short compared to peers. What assisted me was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely unclear to others as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson during the first year. Reach out for help from both classmates and faculty!

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department is exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and are aware of the difficulties students encounter. They show understanding and keep in touch with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking risks – I ventured out by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which proved invaluable. There are countless ways to bond with staff, and it is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway is to fully leverage the support that is available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has demonstrated that feelings of nervousness about university are often baseless and can be eased with the support that staff and fellow students provide. It has shown me that I’m never truly alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
