By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, sitting here now, I can assertively say I have forged some of the best friendships of my life here at this university and in this course. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what lesson did I gather? I found that it’s crucial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, have no fear! There will be numerous ice-breaker occasions and events designed to help you connect with peers. I also realized that if you can be anything, just be yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the volume and complexity of the coursework. There was definitely an elevation from A-levels, and in some ways, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes impact your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few factors assisted me in navigating that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re confused about something, I can almost assure you that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to embrace during your first year. Seek help from classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my following point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They show understanding towards students and ensure ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had sought it out earlier. I talked about taking chances before – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the greatest things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this facet of university is to capitalize on the assistance you are provided. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find joy even amidst stresses like exams and deadlines.
