Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights did I gain, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most frightening elements of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be your greatest worry. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days before the semester kicked off, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the best friends here at university and in my program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with people in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy, that’s okay! There are numerous ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with others. I also noticed that being true to yourself is vital. With such a variety of people across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your mindset.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a significant leap from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can challenge your confidence; you may notice others studying and feel inadequate. What assisted me was the realization that everyone is experiencing the same situation. If something seems unclear, I can almost assure you that others are struggling too. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask peers and faculty for help!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and keep open lines of communication regarding our difficulties. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This experience helped me connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are many ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the support provided. You can never receive too much!

Overall, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and throughout university, are often unfounded and can be eased with the available support from faculty and fellow students. It taught me that I’m never alone and how to have fun despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
