Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year packed with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening elements of commencing university, and if you’re an upcoming student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day moving into my residence, prior to the term starting, I remained in my room the entire day, feeling too daunted to go out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of my closest friendships here at the university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversation with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I found that it’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that being true to yourself is essential. With so many diverse individuals throughout the program and university, you’re certain to encounter like-minded people.
Another obstacle was the academic workload and the difficulty of the material. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and an even greater shift from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was the reassurance that everyone shares similar experiences. If you don’t grasp a concept, chances are others are struggling too. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out to both peers and faculty for help!
The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the later part of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I referred to taking risks before – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to become acquainted with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway is to fully embrace the assistance provided. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year revealed to me that apprehensive feelings regarding university are often baseless and can be eased with the help available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
