Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Engaging with the unfamiliar wasn’t something my former shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyable experiences! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the primary and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This certainly ranks as one of the more unsettling elements of commencing university, and if you are reading this as an incoming student, it may be one of your significant worries. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the semester, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Today, however, I can assertively state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, initiated by engaging in light conversation with others facing similar circumstances. So, what insights did I gain? I learned that taking a bold step at the outset of the year is always beneficial. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be a multitude of ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’ll inevitably meet people who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the workload and complexity of the material. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in some instances, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the realization that everyone is in the same situation. If you find something puzzling, I can nearly assure you that there are others struggling as well. So, seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to internalize during the first year. Request help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke earlier about taking bold steps – I took one at the outset of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the support available to you. You can never receive too much!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are almost invariably unfounded and can be eased by the various support resources accessible from faculty and peers. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.
