By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a fresh student. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year abundant in personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year imparted to me, and where do I stand now?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This can often be one of the most apprehensive parts of entering university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might rank high on your list of concerns. On my first day moving into my accommodations, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the entire day locked up in my room, too frightened to venture out and connect with others. However, today I can assertively say I have forged some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all initiated through casual conversations with others in the same boat. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that starting the year requires a brave leap. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be many ice-breaking chances and activities to facilitate engagement with others. I also discovered that if you are to be anything, just be yourself. With the diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to discover people who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a situation can test your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few things assisted me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find something confusing, I can nearly guarantee there are others feeling the same. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely desire your success and recognize the difficulties students face. They show understanding towards students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully exploit the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had engaged with it sooner. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I did take one at the beginning of the year by stepping up as a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My principal takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never receive too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both pre- and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated through the numerous support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It’s revealed to me that I’m never truly alone, and it has taught me how to find enjoyment amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
