By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating tasks was building friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of starting university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may be your biggest concern. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, reflecting from this point, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced within this university and program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations with individuals facing similar situations. So, what have I learned? I’ve learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be true to yourself. Amidst a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the volume of work and complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a scenario isn’t always conducive to your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the awareness that everyone is experiencing the same journey. If something confuses you, I can almost assure you that others are equally puzzled. Therefore, seek assistance. This may very well be the most crucial skill to acquire in your first year. Don’t hesitate to seek help from both your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to students and uphold ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the assistance provided. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated through the various support systems available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone and has revealed how to find enjoyment amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
