Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of joy! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most overwhelming challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your biggest worries. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I felt too intimidated to step out and meet others. Here I am today, able to assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life here at this university and within this program. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I gain from this experience? I learned that it’s always beneficial to make a bold move at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breakers and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, it should be authenticity. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle I encountered was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can often pose challenges for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the realization that everyone is experiencing the same journey. If something isn’t clear to you, I can nearly assure you that there are others who feel the same. Hence, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Look for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to prosper and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking bold steps – I did seize one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to become familiar with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway regarding this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance being provided to you. You can never have too much of it!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of apprehension, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I’m never isolated, and it has taught me how to relish my experiences even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
