By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Back in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about the future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into unfamiliar territory was not something my previously timid self was used to. Looking back now, I realize I had a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what have I discovered this year, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect of starting university frequently ranks among the most frightening, and if you’re a potential student, it may be a significant worry for you. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just days before the term started, I remained in my room the entire day, too daunted to go out and meet others. Today, nonetheless, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, initiated through casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what did I uncover? I realized that making a bold move at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless opportunities and events to break the ice and connect with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, it’s to be yourself. With such a diverse range of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter individuals like you.
An additional challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Some factors aided me in overcoming this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you do not comprehend something, I can nearly guarantee that others are also struggling. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most critical lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and instructors!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to flourish and understand that students face difficulties. They show empathy and keep in touch with us consistently throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one at the year’s beginning by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to become acquainted with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be eased by the support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find joy in the midst of pressures like exams and deadlines.
