Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself in the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights did this year offer, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re a potential student reading this, it might be one of your primary worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the term start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, I can now assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always preferable. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities to help you connect with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, be true to yourself. With such a diverse group of people in the course and the university, you’re sure to find those who share your values.

Another challenge was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a notable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be daunting for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re unclear about something, I can almost assure you that others are as well. Thus, seek guidance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn during the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and acknowledge that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and maintain open lines of communication with us regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t completely utilize the support services until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one at the year’s onset by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it undoubtedly ranks as one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this facet of university life is to fully leverage the available assistance. You can never have too much!

In general, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased through the various support options offered by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment while addressing stressors such as exams and deadlines.
