Authored by Dawson La, MEng in Materials Science and Engineering

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and reserved nature was prepared for. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with self-development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! But what lessons has this past year imparted, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most challenging hurdles was forging friendships. This is among the more frightening elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your top worries. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days before the semester started, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here now, I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with striking up casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what have I discovered? I learned that it’s always wise to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that the best thing you can be is yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to find others who share your interests.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even bigger jump between the first and second terms. Being placed in such a setting isn’t always conducive to confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost assure you that there are several others who also don’t grasp it. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and comprehend that students face difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps earlier—at the beginning of the year, I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to interact with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous things you can do for your progress! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the support offered to you. You can never have an excess of that!

On a broader scale, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be eased with the abundant support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never truly alone, and it has taught me how to have fun alongside the stressors like exams and deadlines.
