Authored by Dawson La, MEng in Materials Science and Engineering

Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about the future as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Navigating this new chapter was overwhelming for my previously reserved self. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with growth, trials, and joy. What insights have I gained, and what is my present standing?

One of the first and most daunting obstacles was forging friendships. This frequently weighs heavily on new university students’ minds. On my initial day in my accommodation, I isolated myself in my room, too anxious to socialize. Now, I can assert with confidence that I have formed some of the finest friendships here at university and within my program. I discovered a supportive community at Imperial through casual conversations with fellow students facing similar challenges. The essential lesson is to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared, fret not—numerous ice-breakers and activities are on hand to facilitate connections. Be authentic; with such a diverse crowd, you are bound to find those who click with you.

Another hurdle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was pronounced, and an even steeper incline occurred from the first to the second term. This can take a toll on your confidence, particularly when you start to compare yourself to peers. Keep in mind that everyone shares this experience. If something escapes your understanding, others probably feel the same way. Seeking help is vital in your first year—reach out to fellow students and faculty!

The faculty in the Materials department is remarkable. Their genuine desire for our success and their awareness of the difficulties students encounter is palpable. They foster transparent communication regarding our worries. I only accessed the pastoral support later in the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which facilitated connections with staff—a valuable opportunity. Numerous avenues exist to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make. Make the most of the support available; you can never have too much!

This year has illuminated the fact that pre-university apprehensions are often baseless and can be eased through support from both staff and peers. I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone and how to find joy even amidst stresses like exams and deadlines.
