Fast forward ten months to October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Taking such a significant step was unfamiliar territory for my once-shy self. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what’s my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is often one of the most daunting parts of starting university, and if you’re considering this path, it may rank high on your list of worries. On my inaugural day moving into my accommodation, just days before classes began, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too fearful to venture out and socialize. Today, I can confidently assert that I have formed some of the closest friendships here at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all of which began with casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. So, what have I come to understand? I’ve realized that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker events designed to help you engage with others. I also discovered that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to find those who vibe with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a stark increase from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being in this type of scenario can significantly affect your self-confidence; you might notice your peers studying and feel inadequate in comparison. What was beneficial for me was the realization that everyone shares this experience. If you’re struggling to grasp something, chances are, others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most vital lesson of the first year. Reach out to your peers and faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges that students face. They show empathy and maintain ongoing communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the support services until the year was wrapping up, but I wish I had done so earlier. I touched on taking leaps before – I took one by stepping into the role of a year well-being representative. This opportunity enabled me to connect with staff members, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your well-being! My primary conclusion is to fully utilize the support available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety about university are often unfounded and can be mitigated through the assistance provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never truly alone and how to find joy even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
