In October 2022, a mere ten months ago, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Leaping into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Reflecting on the year, I recognize it as a period marked by personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was making new friends. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it may be among your greatest worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room due to feeling too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself. Today, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I have realized that it’s beneficial to take risks at the outset of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker events and initiatives will present themselves to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, I learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals in the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was indeed a noticeable transition from A-levels, and in a few ways, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can challenge your confidence; witnessing others studying might leave you feeling inadequate. Several factors assisted me through those feelings, one of which is the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can almost assure you that others are experiencing the same. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They sympathize with students and maintain consistent communication regarding our challenges. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I spoke of taking risks – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous steps you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to utilize the support available. You can never have too much!

In broad terms, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased through the support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
