Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of embarking on my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved nature was familiar with. In retrospect, I recognize a year rich in personal growth, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what has this year revealed to me, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day moving into my accommodation, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the entire day secluded in my room due to feeling too anxious to venture out and greet others. Reflecting from this point, I can assertively state that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever known here at this university and in this program. I have created a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was initiating casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events to facilitate your interaction with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be true to yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another challenge was managing the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a shift from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be daunting for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me overcome that sensation, one being the realization that everyone shares similar struggles. If there’s something you don’t grasp, I can almost guarantee that there are several others who also find it challenging to understand. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to master in your first year. Don’t hesitate to request help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and acknowledge that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I initially mentioned taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by serving as a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best moves you can make for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to fully utilize the support being offered to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!
In a broader sense, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be alleviated through the numerous support options accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone, and it has taught me how to find joy alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
