Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and fun. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This often stands as one of the most nerve-wracking elements of entering university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, just days before the semester began, I spent the whole day inside my room, too anxious to go out and meet others. Yet today, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had in this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with brief conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I understood? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not yet ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be plenty of ice-breaker chances and events for you to bond with others. I also discovered that being genuine is essential. With such a diverse group of people in the course and the university, you are sure to encounter like-minded individuals.
Another hurdle was juggling the workload and the complexity of the subjects. There was undoubtedly a significant increase from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even more considerable jump from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such a setting can be challenging for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sense, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating through the same challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, I can nearly guarantee that your peers are likely facing similar difficulties. Hence, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the single most critical lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and appreciate the hurdles students encounter. They relate to our experiences and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t actively utilize the pastoral support until late in the academic year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. As I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with the faculty, and it’s unquestionably one of the finest things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway from this part of university life is to seize the offered assistance. You can never have excessive support!
All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the various support options provided by staff and fellow students. It’s made me realize that I’m never alone, and it’s illustrated how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
