Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Stepping into the unknown was not something my once timid self was used to. Looking back, I realize I experienced a year abundant in personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
A significant and initially intimidating challenge was making new friends. This aspect of commencing university is often one of the most frightening, and if you’re a future student, it could be a major focus for you. On my first day moving into my residence, just days ahead of classes starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too scared to venture out and connect with others. However, today, I can proudly say I’ve developed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with light conversations with those in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I’ve learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is beneficial. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can embrace one quality, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.
Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was genuinely a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain ways, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting doesn’t always boost your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. Several aspects aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can almost assure you others do as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the single most crucial lesson to learn during the first year. Look for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They genuinely desire your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy toward students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had discovered it sooner. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the year’s commencement by serving as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are many opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My key takeaway from this part of university is to maximize the support provided. You can never have an excess of that!
In conclusion, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nerves, both leading up to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated with the various support systems available from the staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has shown me how to have fun while managing stressors like exams and deadlines.
