Authored by Dawson La, MEng in Materials Science and Engineering

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Engaging with the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what have I learned, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of starting university, and if you’re considering this path, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my dorm, just days before classes commenced, I remained in my room the whole day, too frightened to step out and introduce myself. Today, however, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all began with casual conversations with people in similar circumstances. So, what did this journey teach me? I realized that taking a bold step at the year’s outset is beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless opportunities for ice-breaking and events to facilitate connections. I also discovered that if you can be anything, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are certain to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. An adjustment from A-levels was evident, and in many ways, the transition from the first term to the second felt even more significant. Being immersed in such a setting can undermine your confidence; when you observe others studying, you may feel inadequate. Various factors assisted me in overcoming this sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that others share the same struggle. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the essential skill to cultivate during your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in the Materials department are phenomenal. They genuinely want you to thrive and acknowledge the difficulties students encounter. They show empathy and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our worries. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your own progression! My key takeaway regarding this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the assistance provided. You can never have an excess of support!

In conclusion, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university life, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the numerous support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to enjoy life despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
