Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was preparing to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshmen. Diving into such a new experience was far from what my previously quiet and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as one brimming with personal growth, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current state?
One of the initial and most daunting challenges was forming friendships. This aspect of starting university is surely one of the more intimidating, and if you are a prospective student reading this, it could be among your greatest concerns. On my first day settling into my dorm, a few days ahead of the semester commencing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and greet others. Yet, sitting here now, I can confidently assert that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever encountered, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all commencing from light conversations with those in similar positions. So, what did I grasp? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is essential. If you do not feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be countless ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to facilitate interaction with others. I also discovered that if there is one thing you should embrace, it is to be yourself. The diversity among the course participants and the university community ensures that you are likely to meet individuals who resonate with you.
Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can be a test for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me through that sentiment, one being the acknowledgment that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who feel the same way. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most crucial lesson to acquire in your first year. Reach out for assistance from both your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with us and keep ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t truly leverage the support services until the year’s end, but I regret not doing so sooner. I previously mentioned taking chances – I did take one at the year’s outset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to build rapport with the staff members, an immensely valuable experience. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway regarding this aspect of university life is to fully utilize the support that is extended to you. You can never have too much help!
In a broader sense, this year has revealed that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be mitigated through the plethora of support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never isolated, and it has shown me how to find joy even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
