Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year undergraduate. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This can be one of the most daunting facets of commencing university, and if you are a prospective student, it may be one of your chief concerns. On the first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before the term began, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to go out and socialize. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever encountered here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking risks at the beginning of the year is paramount. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker occasions and events will be available to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse range of individuals across the program and university, you’re certain to find those who resonate with you.
Another significant challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel lacking. A few strategies aided me through this experience, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others are in the same situation. Thus, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the staff!
This segues into my next point. The staff in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to become acquainted with the staff members, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s undeniably one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance offered to you. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased through the various support systems available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone and how to find enjoyment alongside pressures like exams and deadlines.
