Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the cusp of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not familiar territory for my previously shy self. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are a future student, it might be your primary concern. On my first day of moving into accommodations, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire time in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet new people. Now, I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the best friendships during my time at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with light conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I glean? It’s wise to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or don’t feel at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to aid in making connections with others. I also learned to embrace my true self. With such a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the demanding workload and complexity of content. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can shake your self-assurance; you may feel inadequate in comparison to your peers. What benefited me was the realization that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson in your first year. Reach out for help from fellow students and staff!

This brings me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They are committed to your success and truly understand the difficulties students encounter. They show empathy and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns throughout the year. Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, I wish I had sought it out earlier. I mentioned taking leaps – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it is one of the finest things you can do for your personal benefit! My key takeaway is to fully utilize the assistance offered. You can never receive too much support!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness about university are often unfounded and can be eased with the support that is available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
