By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainties regarding the future. As a first-year student, I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide me, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most anxiety-inducing parts of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to step outside and meet new people. Today, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? It’s always beneficial to take a step forward at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker events designed to foster connections with others. Also, if you can be anything, make sure to be yourself. With such a variety of individuals across the course and the university, you’re sure to meet like-minded people.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the difficulty of the content. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and in some ways, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Thriving in such an environment can pressure your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few things aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If something is unclear, I can nearly guarantee others are struggling too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most essential lesson to grasp in the first year. Seek help from both peers and staff!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They truly want you to thrive and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy towards students and keep ongoing communication about our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I regret not doing so earlier. I referred to taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to build relationships with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to seize the support available. You can never receive too much!

All in all, this year revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It taught me that I’m never alone and how to experience enjoyment alongside pressures such as exams and deadlines.
