Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unknown was a daunting prospect for someone like me, who had always been timid and reserved. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with self-improvement, challenges, and enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undeniably one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester’s start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too fearful to step out and introduce myself to anyone. However, today I can assert that I have built some of the most meaningful friendships at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with others facing the same situation. So, what’s the takeaway? I learned that taking a plunge at the onset of the year is always a positive move. If you don’t feel prepared or comfortable, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker events designed to help you meet new people. I also realized that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse population across the program and university, you are sure to encounter individuals who share your interests.

Another obstacle was the significant workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was indeed substantial, and in many ways, the leap from the first term to the second was even greater. Being thrust into this setting can challenge your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. Several strategies helped me combat this sentiment, one of which is the reassurance that everyone is navigating the same circumstances. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that others are struggling too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could very well be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the staff for support!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy towards students and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking risks earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are various avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the available support. You can never have too much help!

Overall, this past year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated through the support systems accessible from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy even amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
