Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to start my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, challenges, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This can be one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a major worry for you. On my first day moving into my residence, just days before the term started, I spent the entire time in my room, far too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can assertively state that I’ve forged some incredible friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all through initiating conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to aid you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being genuine is vital. With such a diverse group of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who share your interests.
Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a clear increase in difficulty from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first to the second term. Being in such an atmosphere can shake your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and question your own abilities. What helped me was remembering that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you’re puzzled by something, it’s likely that others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most significant lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to prosper and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain ongoing communication with us regarding our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances earlier – I made one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to leverage the support available. You can never have an excess of it!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
