Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in uncertainty wasn’t something my once shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and joy. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of entering university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my residence, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to go out and meet others. Today, however, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all started with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s best to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking occasions to assist you in meeting others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With so many diverse individuals across the program and campus, you’re sure to find kindred spirits.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies helped me overcome that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is probably the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out for support from both classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They relate to us and maintain ongoing communication regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances previously – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main lesson is to utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be eased with the various support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I’m never alone and taught me how to find joy even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
