Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and lots of enjoyment! But what have I discovered this year, and what is my current state?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles I faced was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting facets of beginning university, and if you are reading this as an incoming student, it may be among your greatest worries. On my first day moving into my residence, a couple of days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with some casual conversations with individuals in similar scenarios. So, what have I learned? I’ve learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to help you connect with others. I also learned that being true to yourself is paramount. With such a variety of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge I encountered was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable difference from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. Several factors assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re puzzled about something, I can nearly guarantee that others are confused too. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the single most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely aspire for your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and keep in constant contact with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the finest things you can do for yourself! My chief takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance being offered. You can never have an excess!

Overall, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated by the numerous support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to have fun in conjunction with stressors like exams and deadlines.
