Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. How to navigate the unfamiliar was not a concept I was familiar with, given my previously introverted nature. Looking back now, I perceive a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and ample enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, this may be your foremost worry. On the initial day of moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the semester’s commencement, I remained in my room the entire day, too apprehensive to venture out and socialize. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships at the university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all began with light conversation with others in comparable situations. So, what did I learn? It’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking events will be available to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, I realized that authenticity is essential. With a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded friends.
An additional challenge involved the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant increase from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can undermine your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel unqualified. What aided me was reminding myself that everyone shares the same situation. If something isn’t clear to you, likely, it isn’t to others as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to embrace during your first year. Reach out to peers and faculty for help!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and comprehend the difficulties that students endure. They are understanding and keep an open line of communication with us regarding our concerns. I did not fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referenced taking chances previously – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, a truly invaluable experience. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it is among the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My key takeaway is to fully utilize the support offered. There’s no such thing as too much assistance!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness related to university are oftentimes unfounded and can be eased by the support provided by faculty and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I am never isolated and how to find enjoyment amid pressures like examinations and deadlines.
